Bad Influences....

Hi Jamie,

Very nice looking Jag.

So what cars have you got now you have got rid of the Mazda.

Cougar, Jaguar and Rover. Is there a theme here?

Jamie, call me when you're in Cov, that's only 10mins from me! I'd gladly come and join you for a coffe or soemething if I'm around ;)

Tom,

You've got such a dry sense of humour  Don't pull to hard at that thread though or else there may be another confusing post about ram waves etc lol.

Oh sod it - Basically the Ford version of the engine is optimised to run at 2 specific rpms. All else being equal, the length of the individual tunnels leading from the common throttle body/plenum chamber to each cylinder influences what rpm the engine produces peak torque at. It's all to do with frequencies and pressure waves inside the manifold. Variable valve timing allows you to continuously modify the valve timing to work well at any rpm.

The Cougar engine's torque improves from idle up to the mid-2000rpms, then dies off giving the 3000rpm flat spot. When the secondaries open it retunes it for high rpm and the torque improves again up through the mid-4000rpms then again starts to die off towards the redline.

VVT lets the ECU adjust the valve timing to suit whatever rpm the engine is doing at that precise moment in time, so the Jag's torque curve is better at the bottom and the top, and more constant along the middle - i.e. without the Cougar's bottom, middle and top end flat spots. The downside is that it doesn't feel particularly drastic like the Cougar when the secondaries open..... might not suit everyone?

Anyway, that's why the manual 2.5 X-type with only "24bhp more" than a Cougar is 0.5 sec quicker to 60 than the Cougar despite weighing a quarter tonne more and having more transmission losses due to 4wd (y) My auto is 0.2 secs slower than the Cougar. Who cares - with my gear changes it's probably faster anyway

Incidently, the manual 2.5 X-type shares the same 7.8secs 0-60 time with the Mondeo ST200. The ST200 produced 205bhp and weighed the same as the Cougar. That's the effect a torque curve has and why bhp figures alone don't tell you much....

Rhume, I sold my second Cougar a couple of months ago now, so I've only got the 620 and (from about lunchtime today) the X-type (y)

Kully - will do :D(y)

I"ve always liked X-Types but as i dont need 4 doors I"ve never considered one,...........But, my other half has changed jobs and has had most of the usual from the Company car lists, BMW, Alphas, Merc, Saab etc over the years so this time after a little gentle persuasion, she"s going for an X-Type. Still getting built at present, been on order 2 months and is due at end of this month. Just the base model, 2.0D, but is a lovely car and since the final makeover back in March 2008 they are very well spec"d
compared to the German brands. Even though they are pretty old now and are due to be pensioned off in 2 years time, they are still very distinctive car. :smile5:

Nice new motor Jamie (y) Its a shame that engine wont fit in a cougar!

It would make for rather a fast Cougar!

Incidently, I suspect that the 5-speed autobox would fit the Cougar if the transfer box was left off to leave a 2wd tranny. Should be as quick an economical as the manual nearly?

I'll get some pics and sizes of the Jag unit if anyone wants, but I really can't see it fitting under the Cougar's bonnet :frown2:

Nice car mate (i'd missed the 3 or 4 other pages between my last post):p

I always said if I needed a 4 door car then the Jag would be what i'd choose, they look the dog's in black with blacked out windows:D...quite interesting in RED too.
However I digress, nice bit of info on the engine, and here was me just thinking the 2.5V6 just had a Jag badge on it:LOL: I wonder if the 4x4 system could fit the Cat:idea:
If your changing the wood go for something darker or Piano Black (ebony) it would realy suit that colour car.

As your over the midlands on the 13th why not meet up with us all after the Blue Oval Rally at Gaydon's Heritage Museum.....lots of engine's in bits for you to drool over..:ihih:

Would be an interesting engine change for someone with a fat wallet (y)
Glad you're enjoying the car Jamie, i know you were pretty excited about getting it :smile5:

Here are a few pics of the engine for anyone interested. LIke I said, I really can't see it fitting under a Cougar's bonnet. The floor pan is well known to be based on the Mk3 Mondeo too - but it's been heavily modified to accomodate the transfer diff and prop shaft, so sorry Matt, that wont fit either without severe metalwork to the floorpan of the Cougar :frown2:

Well if anyone fancied it, there would be no point in fitting the 2.5 really when the 3.0 is the same external size. You'd have to do all the electrical changes anyway so the 231PS 3.0litre would be the obvious choice...

Stewart the current, and last, of the X-types are being sold with 6spd FWD automatics if that would be of any interest? ;) I really like the 5spd Auto I have and am confused as to why Ford chose the CD4E for the Cougar when Jag nicked the 5spd from Ford for the X-type and put the J-gate on it :s

I like the way they have the Air-Box at the front of the engine with the ram scoops directly in the airflow coming through the grill, now why didn't they think of that with the cougar. It don't look anything like the Duratec though does it. Hydraulic bonnet lifter as standard, and twin bonnet locks nice.
You will need that 4x4 in the winter mate....TRUST ME!

That's where the Cougar's UIM and IMRC box sit Matt. The IMRC could've gone anywhere I guess but the UIM would've been a problem for them...

It's a nice arrangement now though :) I wonder if we'll get any snow this year

jamie, good to see you got the jag, 1st step to that better one you dream about eh!!!!! good luck..... have the use of a diesel x type special ltd edition at work, body kit all the extra's nice car yer, i used to like the S type but comes with slippers and a pipe!!!

I swear I'm getting worse with age rather than better, but the X-Type has been short lived.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever but I was out buying a copper washer and spotted something else on a forecourt which caught my eye. Well, the car, the spec and the price caught my eye...

Jaguar dealer, Black S-Type 3.0 Sport (no chrome, 18" 8-spoke alloys) with more nifty gadgets than I can be bothered to list - some I've had before on various other cars, some I haven't. Certainly never had a car with all of it together in one package. Black leather interior with an aluminium sort of finish on the interior facia. Everything was at a price that was within reach so I went back later to see what milage was on it (diesel SE models next to it at same price had 33k and 37k on them) so I expected something similar - but it was 19,800 miles on a 55 plate, one owner and FJSH.

Decided we wanted it, but went through some numbers with the dealer and didn't like them. A few tries later we got a free 12 month warranty, full service etc, ?ú2500 "Jaguar Incentive" to boost the X-Type's trade-in value then finally around ?ú600 knocked off the window price after the car had been assessed in the workshop to see how much they had to spend on it to sell as an "Jaguar Approved Used" car and they'd worked out what was spare in their budget.

So - <20k mile S-Type 3.0 Sport which pre-dates the ?ú400 road tax by 3 months with all options apart from touch screen sat nav (and adaptive cruise control which is a PITA anyway - it brakes as you overtake lorries on the motorway etc - ordinary CC is better for me) with 12 months Jaguar warranty for just over ?ú11k. I'm happy with that :)

The really funny part was last night arranging free 7 Day insurance so the dealer can get the tax... it's through Norwich Union Direct and to get it you have to let them quote you happy for a 12 month policy...

Only ?ú1,966.77

"Would you prefer to pay annually or monthly Sir?"
"Err, that's 5 times what my current insurer wants"
"I must tell you Sir that Norwich Union are the best company at settling claims"
"Super, but just how big a crash do you think I'm planning to have?"
