I swear I'm getting worse with age rather than better, but the X-Type has been short lived.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever but I was out buying a copper washer and spotted something else on a forecourt which caught my eye. Well, the car, the spec and the price caught my eye...
Jaguar dealer,
Black S-Type 3.0 Sport (no chrome, 18" 8-spoke alloys) with more nifty gadgets than I can be bothered to list - some I've had before on various other cars, some I haven't. Certainly never had a car with all of it together in one package. Black leather interior with an aluminium sort of finish on the interior facia. Everything was at a price that was within reach so I went back later to see what milage was on it (diesel SE models next to it at same price had 33k and 37k on them) so I expected something similar - but it was 19,800 miles on a 55 plate, one owner and FJSH.
Decided we wanted it, but went through some numbers with the dealer and didn't like them. A few tries later we got a free 12 month warranty, full service etc, ?ú2500 "Jaguar Incentive" to boost the X-Type's trade-in value then finally around ?ú600 knocked off the window price after the car had been assessed in the workshop to see how much they had to spend on it to sell as an "Jaguar Approved Used" car and they'd worked out what was spare in their budget.
So - <20k mile S-Type 3.0 Sport which pre-dates the ?ú400 road tax by 3 months with all options apart from touch screen sat nav (and adaptive cruise control which is a PITA anyway - it brakes as you overtake lorries on the motorway etc - ordinary CC is better for me) with 12 months Jaguar warranty for just over ?ú11k. I'm happy with that
The really funny part was last night arranging free 7 Day insurance so the dealer can get the tax... it's through Norwich Union Direct and to get it you have to let them quote you happy for a 12 month policy...
Only ?ú1,966.77
"Would you prefer to pay annually or monthly Sir?"
"Err, that's 5 times what my current insurer wants"
"I must tell you Sir that Norwich Union are the best company at settling claims"
"Super, but just how big a crash do you think I'm planning to have?"
