Ok so there has been a 2.5 v6 cougar sat in a drive across the road from my grandma's for the past 3ish years... It has not moved, license plates have been removed and its been left to die... I want it.

I know little about the car but will speak to the "guy" this weekend to get info but from what I can see it is silver and in good nick, has a stainless steel exhaust that's splits into 2 at the back and the handbrake has been left on.

All things considered (the cost of all the fluids, plugs, battery, new brakes maybe) what do you think its worth? It might not even move at all.

If I offered £230 would I get laughed at? :D

only one way to find out, realistically it's not worth much more, especially when you factor in it's final value and the money you'll no doubt need to spend to put her right, the rust will have started to creep up now and it may well have shot brake lines etc (mine did)

there may well be a valid reason it's stood for so long, dead clutch or some other uneconomical repair, it was loved enough to have a SS exhaust spent on it at one time which suggests it was parked up for good reason.

mine was stood for a long time and I've absolutely thrown money at it to get it up to spec (more than I paid for the car) and she's still not there yet, click the link in my sig for my ongoing thread.

in hindsight it may have been better not to go the way I chose but it's been fun nonetheless!

It was stood because the owner went bankrupt and transferred it to his parents name and house... Thats where its been since :0

I have priced up the following:
brake fluid 15
coolant 16
brake lines 65 (stainless steel... Shiny...)
oil 25

fuel filter
air filter
oil filter

totals = 29

cabin filter 6.36
sump plug+washer 5
spark plugs x6 20.20
fan belt 10
easy start fluid 7

198.56

Some of them are approximately, others I have prices of...
Brakes are about £60-£75 per caliper so up to £300 all round :/
Discs and pads are not so bad about £100 or both, you all already know this though xD

scunnycougar - got a trailer and something to tow it with? Its a little too big to carry home :(

the brake lines might be just the stainless flexhoses and not the main steel pipes that run around vehicle, also the front to rear pipes involve dropping fuel tank
the pipe to do it is cheap as are the connectors if doing yourself, also the flaring kits can be reasonable if you consider cost of garage dropping tank etc

I would be doing allllllllllllll the work myself... Neither of my cars have ever seen a garage, first one had a service, timing belt, 2 fan speed controller units and a ICV, second one just had an alternator...
Hopefully this cougar will only need the initial work above :p

I meant the metal brake lines not the flexi hoses, mine were rotten where they drop down from the tank and go under the chassis rails, also £20 for spark plugs is optimistic, should really be putting Motorcrafts in there and nothing else.

you may want to look at the tyres too they'll possibly be perished and need replacing, have a GOOD look underneath.
don't forget to budget for cleaning her up, it's surprising how much it all adds up to
you'll also need tax and MOT on it at some point

sounds like I'm trying to put you off but I'm not, just go in with your eyes WIDE open and realise what this is going to cost you (probably more than you think)

good luck whatever you decide.

those are just the brake hoses from chassis pipes to calipers, you may still need to pipes along chassis as they seem to be going on a lot due to age at moment, you might be lucky and there ok, but the replacement pipe is easily bent to shape to follow chassis and the flairs are easy to form good luck

Also check rear subframe and ARB mounts. All that time standing can't have been good to them!

With a car like this (stood getting damp and rusty for three years?) get it thoroughly checked underneath for structural integrity (make sure it still has a floorpan which is actually connected at the sills) ;). It's the rotten bodywork that cripples any car in this situation. Everything else, and i do mean everything! is "bolt-on" , so find out as much as you possibly can. Don't be the mug the owner has been waiting for to come and take the old rust bucket away for him, AND get the bonus of being paid to do it.

Oh dear god I wish I was a mechanic, looks like the Haynes manual will take some stick.
All in, then, looks like I'll be aiming at about £900 on the road?
£230 car
£121 tax
£230 service parts, I'll fob the shiny shiny off for now and factor in for the metal pipe and better quality plugs, does this amount seem OK? :0
£350 "other parts" things I have missed and will no doubt need.

I'll give it a good days check over before I lay any money down, might buy it for breaking anyway :D

For £900 I'd be buying Tim's pimped Zetec! That car is truly stunning and has a wealth of history with it too. Meticulously maintained and a lot of time and effort gone in to it. Needs a little interior finishing if you're after a project ;)

Yeah a project is what I'm after! And a V6 :D
Thing is... My girlfriend is limiting me to £500... For the car!
But she never mentioned parts ;)

Another but... What are the zetec's like?
Nothing on the V6?

I'll PM you address.
Don't know if its for sale, going to inquire more tonight.
If its completely brown I'll buy one off ebay and do my plans with that :).

1) Get a new girlfriend
2) buy as many parts as possible for the least amount of money.
3) A couple of zetecs in here are close to V6 performance, and at least one is head and shoulders above a V6 performance.

4) Hope we havn't put you off yet :)

2) scunnycougar :D
3) Room in that bay for a turbo? ;)
4) My first car was french... Mechanical problems do not put me off! Haha.

You should check out bobster_1982's car. 2.1 Zetec Turbo aka The Snowcat. Definitely more poke than a V6
