We're in Milton Keynes, so only 18 miles away from you. T has pointed out that we're up your way on Sunday so if that's good for you, we can drop in on you and give you a diagnosis and a result from a code reader.

What do you think?

that would be great, its my niece's 18th on sunday so im checking plans, can I let you know tomorrow? That's very kind of you, thank you :)

Fine by me. T and I will be passing by your way and I carry that sort of kit anyway.

If you want a code check, we're happy to stop on by and do one for you.

Great thanks, will let you know tomorrow, will be great to get a second pair of eyes on him before going to another garage 😊

i was just finding out if i could pop up to corby to help out but you've got there first chris...
if you find it needs anything like a stat, complete water pump or anything assosiated with the cooling remember ive got that complete engine with all the ancillararys in the garage..let me know.

Well, I'll let spaceychick tell you the story, but it looks as though her mechanic was right.

But it's not a total disaster - the car has 16 years worth of character to the bodywork, but isn't bad at all. But the underside would make Steve Morris grin. It honestly looks like it just came out of the factory and is totally solid.

That being the case, I think that this car should be saved if she finds it economically viable. T and I have thrown our hat in the ring and have offered to help, so that gets the ball rolling.

Spaceychick, over to you...

Top work Chris, shame to hear the verdict but it sounds like it can live again with a little investment

It'll be a weekend's worth of work for three of us at worst.

I don't want to say too much because this isn't my thread and isn't my story to tell, but seriously you want to see this thing. Fried eggs and bare naked sills that look like they've never even seen salt. Body-wise it needs compounding, a couple of door-dings sorted, and simple headlight restoration (like most C1s). We located the source of a tiny boot leak that could be fixed in 5 minutes.

Tracey and I are right behind this, whichever way spaceychick wants to go.

:) although not the best news on whats wrong with the old boy, as Chris says he is solid, in very good condition for his age so im soooo up for getting him fixed! apart from the obvious a little more TLC on him and I think he will do me proud for a few years yet! Chris im more than happy for you to talk about the car on my behalf has you know way more than me! I have some funds, a kettle, can cook a bit so with Chris and Tracey kindly offering to help with an engine change im now asking who is up for helping me? I am starting from scratch as in, in search to purchase an engine and bodys to help. :)

Iwill certainly come over and help. I can't provide much apart from enthusiasm but you'll be surprised what this crazy lot can get done in a weekend ;)

Okay then.

This motor (probably an early one) threw its water pump. Most of you know why this would've happened - it was the early one with the floating disc that gradually destroyed the inside of the pump housing.

The coolant then exited the car over what must've been a brief period of time, and the motor eventually overheated. The damage seems to have started over cyl 4 ("front" bank, offside) as there is serious discolouration of the cam covers in that area and the spark leads show signs of heat damage. The OS suspension upper bearing has coolant in it too, but that probably came from the expansion tank.

From the look of the left side of the scuttle, the coolant exited the car to the rear under pressure and warped/discoloured the pollen filter cover.

At this point, the engine was overheating badly and unbeknownst to anyone, either the head gasket failed or the front head warped slightly.

Things are a bit hazy here for me, but... The water pump was replaced and the car driven for a further 4-500 miles, with occassional top-ups of coolant. The coolant loss was noted and the car taken to a mechanic who determined that HGF was likely.

Looking at the car today, it's throwing coolant through the exhaust and there are petrol fumes in the header tank. The fumes are bad enough that they're visible when the header is open.

My diagnosis is that the front (left) bank has thrown a gasket near cyl 4. Given the cost of fixing it, the engine is BER and should be replaced (though could be repaired and sold on as long as any head warp is in tolerances).

I'm game. Spaceychick knows how to make tea. Anyone else?

I love a good engine swap so i am in depending on dates as most know i dont get many weekends off, but lets wait and see (y)
