In a dream world
I changed jobs recently and i'm driving a bit further than before 50 miles a day around trip, and i've thought the cat might be a little too juicy for this, but to my astonisment, i've worked out its doing a tad under 38 mpg, with a mix of slow twisty and a bit of a blatt down the dual carriage type driving...

I'm pretty pleased with that :)

That's what Mako (also a 2.0 Zetec) will give me on a run of that distance. I think it's the best you can hope for with a well-maintained one.

I was getting 37.5mpg in the old Cougar on the motorway with the speed around 76mph and about 23mpg combined. That was with 119k on the clock.

I remember it was nowhere near that good when I took it over with 29k on the clock and wasn't for some considerable time afterwards either. I would have expected fuel consumption to get worse with age, not better...

In the 'new' one (72K on the clock) it's something like 28mpg m-way and 14mpg combined... Bum...
Hopefully a few 'spirited' drives will clear out the clag and raise that to something more comfortable on the wallet...

I wish i was dick then i would be burying the foot further lol,i roughly get about the same mpg with the 5 as i did my old v6 cougar

As i said a few years ago Who Cares, never bought a car to worry about mpg

Tbh i think we all have too when the price of petrol keeps going up,

But i never did once upon a time, and in fact i didn't when i bought the car December last year, but i was only driving about 5 or 6 miles to work and back, now its 50 a day but even so pretty pleased with that result.

Once i get the new leads and plugs in there it'll hopefully be even better

Ive had 38mpg on a good run, loaded with a weeks worth of camping gear and the car sat on its ass! Probably cruising at 65mph ish, however round town I normaly average 18mpg or less! Neither bothers me though as I only use my car for pleasure as I have a van for work.....I usualy give it a tank a month unless we are attending car shows etc. Oh mines a v6 btw

A recent trip to Milton Keynes gave me 32mpg but that involved a little 'play time' during the journey ;)

When i got shot of my cat i bought a mk3 v6 mongy, got shot of that for a 2.0l beemer (downsizing) then a 1.6 surrender monkey.i hated the loss of power over the saving of a couple of quid a week, not worth it so thats why i bought a mx5 and and tampered with it for more power.i dont do motorway driving and iam mostly in the countryside so up and down gears a diesel wouldnt make much of a saving for me

There are cars you buy for economy and those that you don't you don't buy anything bigger than a Micra or a small diesel family car if you want to maximise your fuel consumption. A Zetec Cougar as a money saving exercise is a waste of space, but you find the same thing with a lot of cars. Why on earth, for example, is there a choice of 1.8 and 2.0 Mondeo? What a friggin waste of time, other than the psychological effect some people need from sensibly going a few cc less.

I just don't bother looking. I do a fairly large amount of milage and figure that my total motoring costs will be hefty anyway. I can trade off road tax and fuel costs against the massive maintenance and repair costs of modern diesels as well as depreciation by getting something a few years old, and just enjoy myself rather hating my life because I hate my diesel and generally being miserable.

I take it your road tax will be around the same as my dads tuscan=cheaper than a 2001+cougar lol
