Saving Cougars

WF0HT61L3X5253443 Cougar 1998-2000, 2.5L Duratec EFI (170PS), Medium Melina Blue Y64VKN 04.08.1999 30.03.2001

I wonder why it was almost 2 years from when it was built until it was registered

That's not uncommon, many sat around unsold for months or years. That's why quite a few C1's were registered on Y and 51 plates, long after the C2 was available (mid-X plate).

I do not think Ford want any history of this car in the future, it will be one of the ones that they want to forget I feel. It did not bring them any success at all really given the low numbers it sold.

Unless Ford have no.1 in their Heritage Collection??

Number 1 doesnt show anything on the etis database

True as that may be there are a few of us who wont let it be forgotten :)

Be careful to not be too Anglo-centric. The Cougar was a complete mess over here but was extremely popular in the USA, and Ford were quite happy to produce them.

Mercury doesn't exist anymore of course, but that's not because of this car. It's because the segment doesn't exist anymore and Ford/Lincoln do the job without that middle-class brand.

You would have to put the Cougar in the same class as the Probe as well. There was nothing really wrong with the car, it was more the market place had changed and nobody wanted big coupes. This is why they both never sold well. I also think price was a massive factor in the Cougar failing at that time. For the same money you could buy a BMW or Merc .........

Dya know! I think i heard something similar to that about ten years ago? Come to think of it, i've heard it several times per year ever since. Any more pearls of wisdom Peter, preferably something new?

Just responding to the last comment Alan. I was not around 10 years ago and many people now here was not either. Not everybody knows the history of the car here, you would be a bit ignorant to assume this to be the case as well.
Also this is my opinion Alan, if you do not like it then please do not comment or take it to a private message if you have an issue with me personally.
Thank you.

Thankyou Peter. I value your opinion.

It is just my opinion that is all. Many people will think very differently to me and I respect that.
What Wil has here is a car that is very much worth saving. I nearly bought this car a few years ago when it was owned by someone down Swansea way but he wanted to much money for it at that time.
I was interested in it as a project to restore it to factory condition ( even fried eggs ) and keep it for the future.
I still stand by what i have always said about the car, it will become a collectors car of the future, will it ever be worth big money.......... who knows.

IMO i think the cougar is underrated....right now they are fetching small money but if looked after they are very reliable.

Had one as a daily driver for 5 years now and never had a major issue

Agreed, the whole time I have had my car the only real issue I have had was the tensioner wheel and belt had to be replaced. I hardly use my car these days now but every-time I go into my garage to start it up it never lets me down. Mechanically it is a great car, it is just a case of looking after the cosmetics a bit now.

I think with any car thats pushing 18 years old you cant expect anything less than to get under it once a year with a drill, sandpaper, stonechip spray and waxoil (y)
