Sorry wish I'd seen this yesterday because your not to far from me I dont think and i was only out shopping so would have welcomed the break ;-) Also would deffo have recognised the noise as mine does it every now and again on starting for about a second.

Hi everyone. iv looked around for a water pump and all i can see on fleebay are re-manufactured ones not the official one. are these ok? i would rather go for motorcraft. some have plastic impellers and some have metal impellers. I swear Kully gave me and idea about this but i cant recall. same with starter motors and these items cost a lot! i cant afford to fit the bits at Bosch yet and wont dare to do this myself without guidance when i obtain the items that i need as this metal machine is close to my heart. Any suggestions dudes? i would rather buy new bits because my plan is to keep the engine running until the end of its life and not buy used parts because you never know if they will cop-out the next day. But like I said, I will try to do this before ford fair.

Metal impeller for water pump Mani don't get a plastic one.

Starters tbh much of a muchness IMO I've used genuine and non genuine on various cars over the years neither is better than the other as far as I am concerned.

The plastic ones seem to break down quicker and fail, I have had a problem twice with plastic ones (albeit with mileage on them) replaced them with metal and done 30k+ mileage with no issues.

Take your starter off and clean up the bendix that should rectify your problem mate without the need to buy a new one its just the crap and dirt in the bendix which has caused it to stick
 
Bearing in mind most V6's still have the plastic impeller pump they left the factory with, they can't be that bad as failures are not very common.
But if you're replacing, you might as well go for a metal impeller one.
Age is another consideration though. With all that V6 heat over 10+ years the plastic must be getting brittle now.
 
Thank you both. Something to consider for my cambelt change as I'll do the pump at the same time. On the engines I know well, (not the Zetec) plastic is supposed to be better than metal.

Iv never done this. and i dont know what a bendix is :( just confused right now

Exactly that's why I added that my two problems were with high ish mileage pumps :) but I agree if you are replacing then defo use a metal impeller one.

Tbh with some cast metal items I have seen in the last few years I would imagine some better quality plastic ones are a smarter choice than a cheap metal one.

Mani, this isn't a Cougar one but they are all much the same.
As Tony says the 'bendix' spins out and meshes with the flywheel causing the flywheel to turn and start the engine.
It isn't supposed to be in constant contact with the flywheel but if it becomes gunged-up it wont return properly.

The bendix metal in the starter motor will be stronger than the flywheel metal so simply unbolt the starter from the gearbox 4 bolts I believe then unbolt the wires on the starter flip it over spray lots of wd in the bendix area work it back and forth. Let it drain out and keep repeating until the bendix moves freely and easily and job done mate.

You will also be able to view the flywheel teeth through the gap after you remove the starter. Fingers crossed the flywheel is undamaged but I seriously doubt it mate but it should be good enough to keep you going until your ready to change it over a long weekend

Also for the water pump go for a metal one

Thanks Dyg but have you heard the noise my starter is making? it sounds like its broken. it doesn't sound like its sticking and thats why i have chosen the one on ebay if its any good? the starter dose sound like its struggling to start the engine up though. My brother has sent his axle stands & HD jack back to halfords now so there's now way i will be able to get underneath the car until next month so ill just jack it in for the moment.

i think i might do the water-pump first if its easy? I will try some bricks or something if i get desperate:D
