The end of the road

You can do it by removing the steering hydraulic unions in to the rack and the column clamp in the footwell, then lower the rack with the subframe. I've done it that way and by unbolting the rack from the subframe. The former is a little awkward for access to the unions. The latter is a finger shredding b*****d of a job with loads of bolts needing fairly high torque to release them with very poor spanner-only access and only finger strength to move them, and that crappy silver heatshielding sh**e removing some skin every move of the spanner.

Yeah. When this happens I most certainly won't be separating the rack from the subframe. It's nasty enough to do that when the engine bay is empty.

I agree about the hydraulic level. Not sure about the relevance of the gearbox oil though? That's nowhere near the clutch...hopefully.

Only if it was within warranty. Sadly, this one is not.
It's very relevant if it's leaking in to the bell housing!

If the shaft seal is leaking the hydraulic action has a pesky habit of forcing it in to the bell housing, can happen if the shaft gets a "thwack" refitting the gearbox.
Not common but it's a differential diagnosis.

Beg pardon - I see what you mean now.

As far as I know it was solid and nothing is dropping out the drain holes. But that doesn't mean it's not now.

Sure as hell something is causing it to slip and since the clutch was pristine last I saw it, there's probably some fluid somehere.

Fluid level is fine, bang on the max.

Guys please, I absolutely mean it, I am out of love with the car and it will be broken.

Occassionally these things can be a moment of clarity or perhaps an emotional release from a car we feel a loyalty or obligation to. It did for me at least (with another car).

Is it too soon to talk about new cars Steve?

It goes like that sometimes chap.

You've gotta do what you want, it is only a car.

Going to be totally honest with you.

It really is only a car. I know that. It's a machine, not a living being. It doesn't care, it doesn't feel, and history won't give a toss whether this one survives another few years or not.

If Steve really wanted it to survive, I'd help him. I can't fathom how it has the problems it has at the moment, but we are where we are and I will do what I can if he asks. Seems he won't though. Seems this car has thrown a few faults beyond what he will tolerate. I get that.

Your point is totally correct of course. But...sometimes, a car isn't just a car. It can be a part of who you are. It can reflect your personality. It can be the glue that binds you to a a bunch of great people that you otherwise would never have met. Truth is that I'm really sad about this, but it's not my car or my money. It's a thing that's happening.

Very good post mate! ^^^^

It is - BUT - I think in truth the cars only introduce us.

In the interests of full disclosure I am mid-whisky, however the proportion of active users in the club who have forgotten how to spell 'Couger' gives a certain assurance that Steve does not need the car to maintain friendships with you folks he's currently friends with.

Having written that and reviewed with another sip I realise I've just completely contradicted Chris - but I'm about to click 'Post Quick Reply' anyway.

No, you're okay there Jamie. You just spelled "Cougar" wrong... unless that was a joke. ;)

It's about the car if you want it to be. But whether you do or not, it's about friends.

That's sad news Steve. Your car is a stunner and you poured your heart and soul into it. I understand your frustrations though :(

That's me just arrived back home Steve and read through this thread. I am really sorry to hear that you had such a nightmare drive home, mine was great, no hold ups whatsoever. As the others have said, it is not irrepairable and after all the time and effort we all put into it over the weekend, it would be such a waste to just let it go. You seen how we managed to suss out the failure to start issue by fitting that oil pressure sensor then the prolem with the rough running when we discovered that a seal on one of the injectors was nicked at the side. These problems you have now should be easily fixed after thinking them through and applying some logic. As the others have said " Sleep on it and you will se things from a different perspective in the morning mate "
