With my rear wheels now refitted and taking the weight of the car I was able to remove the other temp supports and get to the centre of the car to refit the heat shields and exhaust system. Wanted to treat a few rust spots before doing so. Part of this I noticed a minor concern on the drivers side cill. The rotary wire brush went through it and made a 50p sized hole. Cut it out to fag packet size and will be cutting and welding some galv plate in next weekend.
Treated the inboard spots less dramatically and refitted the central heat shield and the rear one near the fuel filler pipe. Next purchase some replacement gaskets for the exhaust flanges.

No an actual legit tool whos purpose is strictly to spread the knuckle for strut removal lol.
A pry bar hammered into the slot also works
Or..... remove lower arms. Leave hang by the strut mount bolts and hit the top of the knuckle with a hammer Thor would be proud of.[emoji16]
Someone goes under with a knackered chisel to apply lateral pressure into the joint. Someone else with a bad temper hammers away at the knuckle with a 5lb lump-hammer.
This will escalate from "tapping" to "raining blows upon it like the fist of an angry god".
Whatever gets it done. And yes, I have been the (5'9" 140lb) maniac with the hammer.
Or jack it up, slip a socket/spanner etc into the now much wider gap, let the jack down and have your spring do the work for you
Just tap a chisel into the split first to open it up a touch.
The "proper" spreader generally makes a mess of ball joint boots.

You'd think so, but I'm not dumb enough to let any of these people use a lump hammer anywhere near my hands.

on the Beetle one had to reach underneath the dashboard,
pull out the bulb holder from the back of the speedometer,
replace the bulb and then push the holder back in...
Modern cars...(sigh)...the attached image shows how much I
had to disassemble to get to the clocks - four more screws to
go and they're out, just so I can access the bulb I need to change...
The upside?
