What Have You Done to Your Cougar Today?

There's a joke that's so old that it has hair on it, which goes like this...

Q: What's the difference between a car salesman and a computer salesman?

A: The car salesman knows he's lying (and probably knows how to drive).

Having said that, Mako was an absolute angel. Smoked a bit at the first startup during her test drive - which they probably noticed but didn't mention - but T judged it as oil coming down the valve guides through lack of use. She was right of course. Once I got on her (Mako, not Tracey) she never failed an emissions test and never lost a drop of oil.

Goes to show...something, I guess. Cars don't like to be garage sl*gs.

Okay I'm way off topic now so peace out. Hope you're all keeping well!

Got a chance to test drive the cat after fixing that IMRC linkage. All I can say is wow, Wow and more WOW !!

The low down torque is there and top end is just crazy, scary in fact...

Just heard from the local Ford dealer that a couple of 3831141 ( No. 6 below ) have landed, which will be my spares to lose like I did the last ones. No doubt they will fall out of a box the day after I part with the car, hopefully well in the future.

I think I need to get Forscan on her this morning and do a full reset ( saves any trouble with the radio ), as she has been a bad girl and learned bad habits, albeit she was forced astray by this crippling disability !

Well, the next exciting episode ( yawn... ) of this saga, follows a quick run of Forscan. Notably finding Error Code DTC P0122 - Throttle Position TP sensor duffo. It also seems that it would not run in 'Closed Loop Mode'. I checked the TPS with a meter and compared it to another in my collection - both mechanically and electrically it was totally beyond any help from me.

However, I could not use any of the others as they appear to be 'handed'. If you look at them closely they actually rotate the wrong way.

So I am after a manual V6 version at this point. Until I get a proper FINIS code, ( does anybody have one ? The forum list doesn't seem to have it ), I'm going by the F5RF 9B989 shown below :-

All the others I have inherited, seem to have an F4aa nannn type code like this :-

Anyway, I've stolen one for now from the spare engine, but would really like to replace it asap. I also noticed an interesting label on the throttle body :-

Following the refitting of the replacement TPS, ForScan immediately picks up data from the sensor. I was also able to clear the DTC codes and run all the diagnostics without issue ( except for a crappy EGR Flow code due to blanked EGR ).

It will now run in 'Closed Loop' as it should and there is a further improvement in performance and smoothness if that's possible. I've also cleared out the 'learned adaptations' and given it a few minutes of varied driving, I guess it will take a few days useage to get it all relearned. Well pleased...

Noel, Just checked my spares bin and I have 2 with the code: F5RF 9B989 if they are what you need you are welcome to try them and see if they work for you.

Got it Andy, Thanks. I was pretty sure that they were a mirror image and it seemed logical that they rotate the other way. I think the auto TB may be like that, though I've never seem one in the flesh. Not sure why I have so many of them though ? I'll have to see if I can see all the FINIS codes and identify them all. They may help somebody.

...Just checked my spares bin and I have 2 with the code: F5RF 9B989...

Thanks Paul, you are a star ! These landed on the mat about 30 minutes ago. That means I can get them checked over and hopefully reassemble the spare throttle body on my project engine without extra work and the risk of losing bits ( like those damned IMRC linkage bushes ). Please PM me your PayPal addy and I can at least get the postage to you...

Started the mot repair work today on my Ebony C1 (I need a name for the old girl...) she has been stood for a few months due to various personal issue's, but hopefully now I can get back on track and get her tested and looking her best again, then it's on to sort out my recent C2 purchase from Mike.

Anyway here's some piccies from today's jobs...

Got her up on axle stands and wheels off to have a good look around.

Well done - that's magnificent and I'm so happy to see you succeding and saving that kitty!

But my word that car could've taken a dirt nap and nobody would've blamed you.

Like Chris, I am absolutely gobsmacked with what you are taking on there Paul. I'm getting all enthused now and will probably look out my MIG welder this weekend. I think the wire is still in the airing cupboard somewhere, where it must have been for 20 years !

What are you going to do 'on the inside' to keep the rust at bay ?
